Huggett Scores Maiden Podium While Smith Excels

GRCS8

GRC Bangers is turning BackMarker Brigade into Podium Brigade as both Paul Huggett and Simon Smith gathered podium finishes in the second meeting last week at Buxton.

Race 1 at Buxton saw Huggett gain his first ever podium finish leading home teammate Simon Smith home to 3rd and 4th places, the best team result in BackMarker Brigade history! It was a momentous occasion which was followed up with a 2nd for Smith in round 2.

“It was a fantastic night of racing. Paul’s worked so hard for us at GRC and to see him rewarded with a podium was great” said teamboss Smith. Smith himself had reason to celebrate, despite falling foul of the tracks bug for giving out stop/go penalties you can’t serve due to a lack of a pitlane entrance – he’d moved into 2nd overall in the championship with the team LEADING the constructors!

“I’ve never been so high, Im getting vertigo!”

Smith Get’s Banged Up in GRC Bangers Cup!

GRCS8

Simon Smith was left shocked and stunned last week when he claimed a double podium in the open three rounds of the GRC Bangers Cup which actively encourages you to win using another means available. Paul Huggett had speed but no luck as he was rolled upside down in the opening laps in two of the three rounds.

It was a shame for Huggett who lead the vast majority of the practice sessions and stayed top of the time sheets until qualifying when a computer problem prevented him setting a time. This left him fighting his way from last on the grid and was overturned in the chaos. After a few laps he was rammed the right way back again but the damage was already done. Simon Smith however was leading after the trio ahead of him had already found themselves in trouble however he was rammed with 2 laps to go by a lapped car getting revenge for losing the lead earlier and this sent Smith off the track and down to 2nd. It was however Smith’s best result which was followed up with a third in race 3.

All the action placed Simon 3rd in the championship, just 1 points behind the joint leaders Tirso Reverter and Pablo Martinez. Paul Huggett spent more time upside down in the first two rounds that anything else but drove well to collect a bundle of points in race 3 to move into 14th overall in the championship.Round 4,5 and 6 take place this wednesday – buckle up!

BMB News Round-Up

Apologies for the delay, but BackMarker Brigade has been a busy snail of late!

The news begins over at GRC where Simon Smith led the team home in both the sprint and feature races at Trois Riviere to claim his season best 10th and 9th places respectively. Paul Huggett claimed a great 14th in the sprint race while Gary Gray claimed a 13th in the feature race. All three drivers performed to their best round the tight Canadian street circuits and now sit 16th (Smith), 24th (Huggett) and 26th (Gray) in the standings as we move to Watkins Glen for the final round.

On the subject of GRC, BackMarker Brigade signed Scott Juliano to the team for Season 9 of the touring cars and for all the cup races, as well as seeing GPO driver Myles Dixon make his debut in the GRC Cup races this week too. Hans Bauer should also be starring in the upcoming GRC Endurance event too adding more new flair and fun to the team.

Grand Prix Online too continues to see great progress for the team! Alex Cooper lead the team home in the Turkish GP for 8th place and several points, just ahead of teammate Simon Smith taking 9th and two more vital points, both drivers maintaining their 100% points finishing record, Smith joint holding the leagure record for having a 100% finishing record and points finishing record! Maurice Willems was on course for points when he had to make an unscheduled pitstop which dropped him to 12th for the flag. Maurice Zondag crashed out with 13 laps to go from what looked like a certain 7th while Craig Johnston was centre of controversy when he was in the middle of a huge accident at turn 1, from which his car was so damaged it left it virtually undriveable and the young Brit parked it. The team will be welcoming Lee Palmer to the full distance challenge event from next round to race alongside Jordon Norwood who was not available for the Turkish GP.

Over at Race Department, our LeMans team didn’t even get off the starting line when ISP problems prevented Johnston taking the start and Jamie Rush was stuck in a driving lesson (oh the irony). However Bob Luneski upheld snail pride with his run to 12th at the FPWS Semi-Pro Turkish GP with another excellent drive. Bob is slowly moving up the championship standings to 17th, with BMB now 9th in the team standings. We are still last however in the Pro divison, so thank god for that!

Formula Sim Racing is last but not least in our news round up which is a celebration as Kostas Kantzouras drove a superb race to qualify for the first time for the main World Series race and then come home a fantastic 14th 2 laps adrift. In World Trophy Benjamin Chong drove his last race for the team before moving on to his new team venture and came home a great 15th. Teammate Roslan Gaidargi also qualified for the main race of WT but then failed to make it round the opening lap, but it was great to see his progress!
What a busy week for Meep!!!

Gray Grabs 7th in Agena Cup!

Gary Gray performed out of his skin to claim a magnificent 7th overall in the Agena Cup over at GRC last week. Gray amassed a fantastic 40 points to secure 7th (equal 6th but with lower results than Allar Foyt). Teammate Rando Muru finished the season 8th after only taking part in 2 of the 8 races but doing sterling jobs in the both.

“Gary is such a dedicated member of the team, even though he’s only been with BMB for a short while” Smith said, paying homage to his driver. “He alwasy gives it his best and is a real team morale booster off track. Massive congrats.”

Gray, Smith, Muru and Paul Huggett all gear up for season 8 of GRC’s Touring Car Series which starts March.

Smith Leads GP’79 Team to 3rd In Constructors Cup

Simon Smith led home teammates Paul Huggett and Gary Gray to 5th place at Brands Hatch to help lift the team to a comfortable 3rd overall in the the GRC Gp ’79 Cup. Smith actually finished a record high 4th overall due to his finishing streak.

Things lifted into a higher gear at Long Beach last week when Gary Gray stormed home to a gutsy 6th showing real grit and determination, while Smith who was running 6th earlier on lost a wheel but somehow managed to limp around the last few laps on three wheels to be home 7th for a great points haul. Then last night at Brands Hatch Smith ran 4th at the end of the first lap battling with championship speedsters Peter Zvan and Ian Mills but eventually finished 5th, 2 laps adrift after a mistake late in the race gifted 4th to Rik Briant. Paul Huggett was running 6th until the dying laps when he crashed out and damaged his car too heavily to continue after returning to the pits.

It did not matter however as BackMarker Brigade amassed a massive 100 points for 3rd overall. Smith came 4th in the championship, a simracing personal best, with 60 of those points. Paul Huggett and Gary Gray placed 15th and 17th overall respectively.

“This is such a great result for me personally and for the team” says Smith. “Massive thanks to Paul and Gary for their enthusiasm and support and this is one evening where the champaigne will definately flow well into the early hours!”
