Smith Makes Season Record in Grand Prix Online!

GPOCL

Simon Smith took 9th in Brazil and 7th at Abu Dhabi to take a new record of not only finishing every single race of the 2010 season but also scoring in every single race too! The superb display of consistancy rewarded Smith with 6th overall at the seasons end, 94 points and cemented his place as top BMB driver in the league this year. Joint with Alex Cooper, the team came 5th in the constructors!

“I’m delighted at my own performance, its been a fantastic season full of racing from start to finish. I couldn’t have asked for more. I’m busy making the last batch of highlight videos before making my own season highlights reel and reliving every moment! Roll on 2011!”

Smith Maintains 100% Points Record at Road America

GPOCL

Simon Smith just about scraped through the American GP at Road America on Sunday with 9th place and 2 points after a very difficult race.

Smith started in the midpack but clouted Vinodh Moodley half way round the first lap and dropped to last with a damaged car. However Smith had planned not to stop and so soldiered on with a heavily battered car. Luck was on his side as the tough and demanding circuit claimed almost half the field and Smith came home a lapped 9th, the final finisher! Paul Frampton was running in the points early on and had moved into 10th but was one of the last retirements with an accident.

This leaves just two rounds left and should Smith score in both of these, he’d be the only driver (as he is already) in GPO’s history to score in every race of a season.

Smith Slides to Sixth Overall At Suzuka

GPOCL

Simon Smith continued his record setting points scoring streak at GPO with an 8th place at Suzuka for the GPO Sprint series after a tough race. However with BMB affiliated driver Ryan Walker claiming his first ever win in the league, Smith drops behind Walker to 6th overall in the championship standings.

The Sprint race quartet of Smith, Alex Cooper, Craig Johnston and Paul Frampton all had dramas during their races with only Smith making it home. Craig Johnston suffered with connection problems and dropped out on the warm up lap ruining what looked like being a great show. Paul Frampton then crashed out on lap 3 after qualifying 15th and running 14th. That left Simon Smith, whom rose to 7th on the opening lap before being hit at the chicane by Cody Bird and spun to the back of the feild, and Alex Cooper, whom was running in the points.
The two progressed well however a vast split on pitstops saw both BMB drivers bit for tyres at the half way point, whilst many others did not. Cooper then on new cold rubber dropped the car at Degner 2 and ended his day in the wall. Smith then picked off some rivals Cody Bird and Matt Malecki to make his way back into 8th place for the chequered flag!

There was also cause for celebration as Lee Palmer was classfied 10th and scored a single point for BMB in the Challenge series despite retiring with a couple of laps to go. This gave Palmer his first point of the series.

Smith said of the weekend “Suzuka is a tough but enjoyable challenge. Lee drove fantastically to pick up his first point and that’s been long overdue. Alex was unlucky not to pick up a top 6, as was I to an extent as I spent the entire race playing catch up. Road America is next for us in replace of Korea and we’re all excited to go well.”

Smith & Fugl Continue GPO Point Runs in Singapore!

GPOCL

Simon Smith, Paul Frampton and Danni Fugl gave BackMarker Brigade a trio of point scoring finishes at the tough Singapore GP over at Grand Prix Online this weekend.

In the 100% distance Challenge race Danni Fugl qualified 13th and had fantastic start to launch to 7th by lap 1 where he fought valiently before an error dropped him to the back of a long queue of cars. From there he had an epic battle with Alexandre Poulin over the final points paying position, eventually winning out and collecting another valuable point for the team. Jordan Norwood had been lapping quickly and qualified 11th only to crash on the formation lap! The faux paux meant a pitlane start which all went horribly wrong when he left with the pitlane light still red and therefore was disqualified. Douglas Simoneli had connection issues and was unable to start.

In GPO Sprint both Simon Smith and Paul Frampton gained their highest ever grid slots in 6th and 13th respectively. However Smith was left livid when contact with Matthew Chan left him front wingless and limping back to the pits ruining all his hard work! From there Smith rejoined 15th and drove his race of the season, battling around the street circuit and overtaking several cars to come home a terrific 7th. En route, Paul Frampton, Smith’s teammate let Smith through and came home 9th for his first points finish in only his second GPO start. This means now that Simon Smith is the only driver to have finished and scored points in every single grand prix this season.

Smith stays 5th in the championship through consistancy and BackMarker Brigade should cling onto 4th in the constructors for the time being.
