Simon Smith and Maurice Zondag amused the audiences at the Hungaroring during GPO’s first official sprint race broadcast on Sunday, coming home 7th and 8th after eventful races!
Smith and Zondag qualified 10th and 8th on the grid respectively however Alex Cooper was a great 5th on the grid, inside a second of the pole time. However Alex Cooper would be a mid race retirement when he crashed into the barriers at turn 5 and ended his race.
Smith initially had a great start into 8th until a spin dropped him to last, where soon he was joined by Zondag who was suffering with computer trouble and was left to plod around at the back to collect the pieces.
Elsewhere in the Challenge race, Jordon Norwood suffered terrible luck when he got the perfect start from 17th on the grid to be in the points in 10th after the first lap! Jordon drove a stonking race until the server broke and the race had to be restarted from scratch. Jordon was unable to take the restart.
“It has been a weekend of fun and endurance for the team” said teamboss Smith. “I personally am delighted with my 7th as it was hard fought and it gives me back 5th place overall in the championship. However Maurice and Alex both deserved more from their efforts and Jordon really stepped up his performance this weekend to. It’s been a hard road for him to get to grips with the GPO car but he was on song in the original race and doing moves I never knew he was capable of!”
The series now enjoys a 3 week break before Spa where the team will unveil BMB Denmark in ode to new Challenge drivers Danni Fugl and the brand new driver Benjamin Luhm. “It’s an exciting new venture for the team and having spent lots of time with Danni, its more new blood into the team and that as ever keeps the Meep spirit alive!”
